While tube mis-connections are rare, compatibility between enteral and other delivery systems, such as intravenous (IV) or luer based delivery systems, can pose a real risk to patient safety and can even be life-threatening.
Therefore Nutricia participated (in collaboration with other leading global suppliers of enteral feeding devices) in the development of a new ISO standard for small bore connectors (80369-3), called ENFit™. This new enteral tubing connection system prevents mis-connections and ensures that only enteral nutrition can be delivered through enteral nutrition delivery systems.
The ENFit™ system is enteral nutrition specific and is designed to be incompatible with non enteral delivery systems such as IV, hereby enhancing safety and reducing complexity.
Adaptors have been designed to connect the ENFit syringe with current feeding tubes. Expect to receive either one of these two designs to enable this connection.
How to flush/medicate during or after feeding.
The first phase to introduce the ENFit™ standard has now been completed with the distribution of ENFit™ giving sets.
